So Special
© 2015 all rights reserved, Music: Adrian Ratcliffe,  Lyrics: Adrian Ratcliffe & Amanda Crosbie

I started writing this song many years ago when my daughter came home from the USA to support a friend of hers at a very difficult time.  To treat her and without her knowing, I had used some miles to upgrade her to business class for the flight back to the USA from Manchester. This was the old style wonderfully comfortable cabin on the old BMI. She even said the on-board chef sat next to her to discuss what she would like freshly cooked! As the plane took off, I sat in the cafe overlooking the runway and began to write these words....

Waiting for your plane to leave
Sipping coffee, window seat
Time for reflection on a moment

Standing at that crossing place
You gave your time, your love, your space
Quietly being there for someone special

Balloons are flying
Flying to the sky
Linking you and I
With colours in our eyes

Time with thoughts
I watched you soar
Knowing you could not want more
Wanted you to feel so special

Walking away from you
It’s something that I hate to do
Bridging that last distance with a smile

A long way home
I'll see you soon
You know I love you
So special to me

Waiting for your plane to leave
Sipping coffee, window seat
Wanted you to feel so special

Being at that crossing place
You gave your time, your love, your space
Quietly being there for someone special

Balloons are flying
Flying to the sky
Linking you and I
With colours in our eyes

Time with thoughts
I watched you soar
Knowing you could not want more
Time for reflection on a moment

A kindly word, a smiling face
Above the clouds, a comfy place
Wanted you to feel so so special
Wanted you to feel so special
'Cause to me, you are so special

Stroll Along The Deben
(The River Knows The Story)
Words & Music © 2016 Adrian Ratcliffe

(Very slow piano intro depicting sunrise and river wildlife waking)
Why not come and join us as we stroll along the Deben
Breathing in the river as she wakes another season
Falling as the wheel turns, rising as the moon yearns
Join us as we learn from nature’s way

Painted boats are cradled by the gentle tide of motion
Watching swans majestic on the water from the ocean
Clouds can gather quickly but the river knows the story
Join us as we love to find that way

Chorus
River flowing, tides all knowing
Souls that learn the river’s way
Falling as the wheel turns
Rising as the moon yearns
Join us as we learn the river’s way

Instrumental

Chorus
River flowing, tides all knowing
Souls that learn the river’s way
Falling as the wheel turns
Rising as the moon yearns
Join us as we learn the river’s way

Why not come and join us as we stroll along the Deben
Dawn ‘til dusk the river lives the highs and lows of being
Falling as the wheel turns, rising as the moon yearns
Join us as we learn from nature’s way

Why not come and join us as we stroll along the Deben
Dawn ‘til dusk the river lives the highs and lows of being
Falling as the wheel turns, rising as the moon yearns
Join us as we learn from nature’s way
Join us as we learn from nature’s way

(Very slow piano outro depicting sunset and river sleeping)

Always Again
© 2014 Copyright, all rights reserved, Music: Adrian Ratcliffe  Lyrics: Adrian Ratcliffe & Amanda Crosbie

I wrote this song to commemorate the 100 year centenary of the first world war. It is a love story which hopefully reflects some of the thoughts of two people caught up in this terrible conflict. I struggled with the ending of the lyrics but my daughter helped from her experience of a partner being on overseas duty - the hope being that "Let us be, who we were then, with me always, always again."
These lyrics reached the semi-finals of the 2015 UK Songwriting Contest and recieved a borderline finalist score of eight out of ten.

Trees in line beside the tracks
Branches waving their goodbyes
I stand alone, anticipation
No sense in pointless conversation

Peering back through noise and steam
What for us does all this mean
I'm on my way, come what may
I hope I see you another day

Oh my love a safe return
Alone I wait while my heart yearns
My arms are open, open wide
We can conquer this divide

Instrumental

The birds don't sing here anymore
Their song replaced by sounds of war
I hope I'm home soon, come what may
I long to see you another day

The birds are singing here today
Their song will reach you as I pray
Thinking of you, every day
The trees are still, when will they sway

The clouds convey my dreams to you
The stars reflect my love anew
Falling raindrops, sprinkle hope
Rainbows grow from tears that choke

Now at last we are as one
The time for us has finally come
Let us be, who we were then
With me always, always again

Let us be, who we were then
With me always, always again

Mistletoe And Mincetart Bling

Dedicated to all those who feel ambivalent about Christmas!
These lyrics reached the semi-finals of the 2016 UK Songwriting Contest

It's Christmas time, don't think that I've
Been writing lists, it's just for kids
Those holly leaves, just prickly thieves
It's just a phase I'm going through
I wish the world for me and you

But if I dare, to catch my dream
Maybe you're there, a snow globe scene
I'll close my eyes, and hold your hand
Flying so high across the land

Christmas time, wish me luck
I've been good, just like I should
Life is hard, in my back yard
Please wish the world for me
Maybe my list will bring
Pointy hats and cheery things
Toys for the children of the world

It's Santa time, don't think that I've
Been writing lists, it's just for kids
Those sleigh bells know, they jingle so
It's just a phase I'm going through
I wish the world for me and you

But then again, my head is full
Singing Santas’, crackers to pull
Christmas choirs, no silent night
Flying to ever greater heights

Christmas time, wish me luck
I've been good, just like I should
Life is hard, in my back yard
Please wish the world for me
Maybe my list will bring
Mistletoe and mince tart bling
Maybe we’ll share a drink or two!

It’s Christmas time, please wish me well
So I've been good, just like I should
Maybe my list has gotten through
Maybe a gift for me and you
Then I can start the year anew
Then I can start the year anew'

Debut of Intrigue
© 2014 Copyright, all rights reserved, Music: Adrian Ratcliffe  Lyrics: Gerry Bremner

Gerry and myself wrote this song after a conversation over a couple of glasses of wine about collaborating to write some original songs and possibly write enough for an Album. It was my first piece of music written after this conversation and I called it 'Debut of Intrigue' to reflect the collaborative beginnings. After playing the melody to Gerry, he wrote some wonderful lyrics  that showed insight into his musical journey.
Eat your hearts out Elton and Bernie!
The song achieved a semi-final place in the 2015 UK Songwriting Contest

It’s taken so much time to see
The truth that lies deep within me
The years have come and they have gone
My path my journey has been long

The doubts the fears that I have held
The reasons why I choose to dwell
Instead of listening to my heart
My dreams awaited me to start

What reasons can I give you now?
For the years that I have let drift by
The fire within me glows forever brighter
Consumes me more as every day arrives

INSTRUMENTAL

Time waits for no man I’ve been told
Like grains of sand beneath my feet
Each day that passes disappears
Lost in the mists of fading years

I have to reach for the stars now
Find my courage, find my strength
Trust in life’s fortune, take my chance
Until the end

I stand before you just a man
Upon the edge of who I am
Shall I turn, shall I fall
Or spread my wings once and for all

I guess it just remains to say
Live every moment of each day
The path I walk where will it lead
This is my Debut of Intrigue

Leaving Before Midnight
© 2015 Copyright, all rights reserved, Music & Lyrics: Adrian Ratcliffe

The idea for this song came from the release of the 2015 Disney Cinderella movie.
The lyrics reached the semi-finals of the 2015 UK Songwriting Contest.

Can I love you, any more than I do
If I go to the ball, will my heart find you

My Cinderella moment, have courage and be kind
Leaving before midnight, golden slipper left behind
Changes life forever, remaining good and kind
And I love you

A pumpkin and a few mice, will take me to my dream
My fortunes are about to change
Your heart belongs to me

My Cinderella moment, have courage and be kind
Leaving before midnight, golden slipper left behind
Changes life forever, remaining good and kind
And I love you

White bird will comfort, watered with my tears
Raising hopes, a kindred soul
A fairy tale come true
The purest soul and ordinary things
Wins the heart that's true

A pumpkin and a few mice, will take me to my dream
My fortunes are about to change, your heart belongs to me
My Cinderella moment, have courage and be kind
Leaving before midnight, golden slipper left behind
Changes life forever, remaining good and kind
And I love you

(Instrumental)

A pumpkin and a few mice, will take me to my dream
My fortunes are about to change, your heart belongs to me

My Cinderella moment, have courage and be kind
Leaving before midnight, golden slipper left behind
Changes life forever, remaining good and kind
And I love you
